Meta Introduces Aria Gen 2 Smart Glasses with Advanced Sensors for AI & AR Research

Meta has unveiled Aria Gen 2, its latest smart glasses built exclusively for research and development in cutting-edge fields like AI, augmented reality (AR), and robotics. Packed with enhanced hardware and advanced tracking capabilities, Aria Gen 2 is poised to support next-generation technological breakthroughs.
Powerful Hardware for Complex Research
The Aria Gen 2 smart glasses are equipped with a 12MP RGB camera and four computer vision cameras offering an expanded field of view and 120dB high dynamic range, making them ideal for capturing data in varied lighting conditions.
In addition, the glasses feature:
- Seven spatial microphones
- Stereo speakers
- Ambient light, barometric, and PPG (heart rate monitoring) sensors
This robust sensor suite enables immersive data collection across multiple modalities, supporting deeper insights for researchers.
Advanced Tracking Capabilities
One of the standout features of Aria Gen 2 is its camera-based eye-tracking system and 3D hand-tracking technology, which together allow for precise manual labeling of datasets—crucial for applications like robotic hand manipulation.
The glasses also incorporate Meta’s custom coprocessor, which powers real-time machine perception tasks such as Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) for highly accurate six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) tracking.
Research Access & Future Outlook
Meta plans to open applications for Aria Gen 2 later in 2025, inviting researchers to apply for access via its official website. Those interested can already join the Aria Gen 2 interest list to stay updated.
Though Aria Gen 2 is strictly for research purposes, it offers a glimpse into Meta’s broader ambitions for consumer smart glasses. Future products may integrate some of these pioneering technologies to enhance everyday experiences in AR and spatial computing.
Meta’s Aria Gen 2 marks a significant step toward the convergence of real-world sensing and AI, setting the stage for the next wave of wearable innovation.
